These aren’t the droids you’re looking for.

If you’ve been keeping up in today’s tech world, you can clearly see that android is taking the industry by storm, and there has been a lot of hype on a phone called the Motorola Droid. What makes the Droid so great and what are its main selling points?

Android is basically an operating system for mobile phones to let them act like mini computers. Think of Android as the linux of phones. Its completely open source, and powered by google. The Moto cliq, the mytouch3g, G1, and Motorola Droid are some popular phones that house this operating system.

It is like a playground for techies, because you can do and make your own apps for free, with pretty much no limitations to what you can do.

As opposed to Apple and the ipod touch, where every app has to go through a “screening”  to approve the apps, android apps can be developed by anyone. The code is written very similar to Java, so anyone with even basic highschool programming schools can make a program for it.

Although the Android app market is not as robust as the app store yet, it is slowly catching up. almost 40k apps for android market versus 100k for app store.

Android is surely going to take the tech world by storm this year, with over 20 android handsets lined up for release this year.

  2. Do you think it’s a good idea how the droid is pretty much open source? Can’t someone make like a virus or something, especially since it doesn’t have to be screened?

  3. I think this versatility of this system is definitely it’s main selling point. I wonder if these companies are planning anything big to combat the seemingly ever popular iPhone, because as of now, the iPhone controls that market. It is interesting to learn about, thanks for posting.
By the way, reference noted on the title.
