Haiti is still in turmoil from the horrific earthquake that happened a little while ago. In Haiti, out of the population of about nine million people almost half of them are children. Also, many of these children live in poor conditions and about five-hundred thousand of these children live as laborers for other families. In this case, since there were so many children, many of these were separated from their family as a result of the earthquake. As over two-hundred thousand people died  many kids were left without parents and in need of help. The normal policy is to find orphans and return them to their community where they could be helped, but in this extreme situation there is nowhere for the kids to return to as their homes were destroyed and left in extreme poverty. According to an article from the New England Journal of Medicine, “A sustained strategy must be developed to mitigate the distress and insecurity of affected children..” I believe in this quote fully as help is continually needed in this destitute country. As long as we work hard to keep a strategy to help these people this problem will be fixed in the near future.
